Apparently, 40 years ago today my brother John, who died of brain cancer at the age of 5, was born. I only know this because my sister posted this on her facebook status. Lets put aside a discussion on appropriateness of using facebook for this kind of announcement (I don't think it is all that bad I guess) and think about whether I am a terrible person for having no idea of the significance of this date. Am I an insensitive son? Or am I just too busy? Or perhaps I am just so zen that I always live in the moment and I don't worry about things that happen 34 years ago. Would that make me insensitive? Is this post trapped in some sort of insensitivity loop?

ReplyDeleteI should develop and objective function (or value function, what ever you call it, is not a utility function) and then devise an algorithm to chose the optimal moral code. At first glance I am thinking Zen Buddhism is the way to go.
